For the last six consecutive years, Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF)’s Ramadan Sports Festival (RSF) has become a must attend event for local community members looking for fun, interactive and sports focused activities during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Sponsored by Ooredoo and Saleh Al Hamad Al Mana Co., this year’s RSF did not disappoint, being bigger and better than previous years and attracting over 1,000 participants who took part in a number of new sporting tournaments that all took place at Aspire’s world-class sporting facilities. As this year’s festival draws to a close, AZF has collated some impressive stats and facts that demonstrate the impact of the RSF and how many community members in Qatar participate.
The RSF in numbers:
- 1,054 male and female participants, 133 matches, 125 hours of play, 11 sports tournaments
- Men’s Basketball: 96 players across 12 teams;
- Men’s Football: 208 players across 16 teams;
- Futsal for Juniors: 88 players across 8 teams. The juniors’ futsal was the only Ramadan tournament for juniors in Qatar;
- Futsal for AZF Staff: 208 employees from AZF and its member organisations – Aspire Academy, Aspetar and Aspire Logistics;
- Cricket Tournament: 90 players across 10 teams;
- Hockey Tournament: 72 male players across 8 teams;
- Volleyball Tournaments: 108male players and 70female players;
- Table Tennis for Special Needs: 30 players in the only Ramadan tournament of its kind in Qatar;
- Ladies Fitness Challenge: 25 of AZF’s female employees;
- Walk in the Dome: 200 female and male participants;
Commenting on the successful conclusion of this year’s festival, Mr. Abdullah Aman Al Khater, Events Manager at AZF, said: “the Ramadan Sports Festival is just one of our excellent events that forms part of our year-round programme of activities aimed at engaging the local community and encouraging active and healthy lifestyles. The new tournaments we introduced this year proved to be a great success and helped encourage more people to get involved and stay active during the Holy Month of Ramadan and this year’s stats clearly demonstrate that the festival getting more popular by the year. Importantly, events like this help us fulfil one of our core objectives which is to promote healthy and active lifestyles among the local communities in Qatar and I think that this year’s festival once again proves that people in Qatar are keen to get involved with sporting community events. We’re already looking forward to next year’s activities.”
Families were particularly keen to join the sporting fun this year, with hundreds cheering on their friends and loved ones after Tarawih prayers. The large turnout made the festival a real sporting spectacle, with moments of sheer excitement and anticipation for the crowds who in turn encouraged those participating. The growing success of the RSF year after year reflects AZF’s commitment to promoting sporting activity among community members in Qatar.
